Jose Alvaro Avalos is vice president in the Internet of Things Group and global director of its visual retail and digital signage organization at Intel Corporation. He leads Intel’s worldwide visual retail business, which entails delivering platforms for digital signage, interactive and public kiosks, intelligent vending and dispensing, virtual banking, intelligent shelving, digital jukeboxes, and interactive whiteboards. Avalos is also responsible for initiatives that fuel the growth of this industry segment.
A founder of Intel’s digital signage business, Avalos earned an Intel Achievement Award in 2011 for his contributions to starting and building the business. He has also been recognized outside Intel. In 2013, he was named one of the 11 most influential executives in digital signage by Digital Signage Today. He has also been granted several patents in the digital signage and visual retail field, with additional patents pending.
Avalos initially joined Intel in 1988 as a product engineer, launching a multifaceted career that has included leadership positions in business operations, marketing and engineering. Before assuming his current role in 2009, he was general manager of Intel’s ultra-wideband networking operation. Earlier in his Intel career, he served as director of marketing for the consumer electronics business unit.
Avalos holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Arizona State University. He serves on the board of the Digital Place Based Advertising Association. He previously represented Intel at the Digital Signage Association; AMITI, Mexico’s IT industry association; SEMATECH; and the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, among others.
